Website of the Office of Grand Ayatullah Saanei :: Fasting in countries where the length of the day is too long
Fasting in countries where the length of the day is too long
Dear Grand Ayatollah Saanei,

I live in Sweden where, due to its nearly arctic climate, the length of the day is much longer than it is in Iran. For instance, this Ramadan I have to fast from 3 a.m. to 10 p.m., and with respect to the fact that I am a student, it is really hard for me to fast for such long hours. Now, my question is whether I can fast for the same hours as people do in Iran with regard to the fact that I am Iranian?

Best regards

The religious timings in such countries are not different from those in other countries since they are set based on the dawn and the dusk. That is, in the Islamic laws, the beginning of a fasting day is at dawn and the end is at dusk. However, if fasting for such long hours puts you to hardship and suffering, you may not fast but it will be obligatory for you to make up for it and keep the Quadha fast whenever possible. That is, you may offer the Quadha fasts when you are back in Iran. And to discern whether it is a case of hardship and suffering is up to the obliged person (mukallaf) themselves (َMan will be a witness against himself; the Noble Quran: Al-Qiamah: 14).
