Grand Ayatollah Saanei’s Statement on World Children’s Day
In the Name of God
I would like to offer everyone, especially the UNICEF staff, my heartfelt congratulations on the auspicious World Children’s Day, which is an expression of love and affection for human beings and respect for their rights, especially the rights of children who are defenseless, and I also take it even more auspicious this year as it coincides with the Holy month of Ramadhan, which is the best and worthiest time of the year to Muslims, and I will pray to God the Merciful for the furtherance and success of all the care and services offered to children all over the world. And why should I not call it an auspicious and promising day while Islamic culture considers those who do not show affection towards children as miserable and unfortunate human beings who will burn in the Hell fire and in the flames of their own cruelty and heartlessness. In short, such people will suffer their own pangs of conscience in this world as well as the punishment in the Hell in the Hereafter. To provide human beings with welfare and comfort, and to serve mankind, we all ought to not only prevent the torment and violence towards the defenseless and helpless children and to legally consider such torment and violence as crime, but also treat them kindly, benevolently, and compassionately so that they would not feel inferior and not suffer lack of affection, which in itself, will have dangerous and serious consequences in the society. After all, to achieve the aforementioned, besides individual moves, human trainings, and dissemination of the rich culture of Islam – which is the very supreme human culture so far as to take the expression of love and affection towards children and one’s offspring as a means of promoting their human qualities in this world as well as their degrees of perfection in the Hereafter- we have to ensure an all-out cooperation with the UNICEF whose staff devotedly make their attempts to the benefit of children, and are definitely loved by all human beings and blessed by God the Almighty, and we should keep alive the spirit of cooperation in charity and benevolence which is the fundamental principle in all humanitarian organizations with the hope that this cooperation would lead to the protection of our children’s best interests and even of all human beings’.
