THE REPLY OF HIS EXCELLENCY GRAND AYATOLLAH SAANEI TO THE LETTER OF HUJJAT AL-ISLAMS MR. KHATAMI AND MR. KARRUBI, AND MR. MIRHOSSEIN MOUSAVI:
In The Name Of God

In reply to the letter dated 25/7/2009 from Hujjat al-Islams Mr. Khatami and Mr. Karrubi, my respectable friend Mr. Mirhossein Mousavi, and the other signatories, and after conveying my due respects, I hereby announce that I heard the voice of you noble men’s complaints and pleas for justice which is itself a true expression and telling of your sincere commitment to Islam and the high and noble ideals and goals of the Islamic Republic as initiated and thought out by Imam Khomeini (PBUH).
As we are all aware, the only decisive factor is the vote of the people, and as it is stated by the charter of the constitution, people must be able to determine their own fate.
It is on this basis and with such aspirations that we are compelled to move along the lines that best defend and determine those freedoms as the right to free speech, truth and honesty and the defense of human rights so as to remove and replace injustice, oppression, blatant lies, and torture both mental and physical, all of which is the outcome of unpopular and oppressive governments, selfish and dictatorial in their manner.
But unfortunately and as you have referred in your letter, we have recently been witness to such events as slanderous lies and false accusations, violation of people’s rights followed by arrests and imprisonments, persecution, mental torture and even the outright killing of a defenseless public despondently protesting the violation of their rights through peaceful demonstrations.
Hereby, according to the duty that bounds me and in the name of the necessity of confronting the injustice of the oppressors, I call upon and warn all those involved, whether principals or agents, in such acts of violence as assaulting, battering, imprisoning and even murdering people in their various walks of life, and tormenting the people further while already incarcerated in cells and prisons adding to the injustice and oppression, that causing people who have no refuge except in God is a mortal sin so great and an act of sin against humanity itself of such inconceivable dimensions that our three infallible Imams warned their three sons (PBUT), who were themselves Imams, and commanded them as their heirs and in their wills to distant themselves from such atrocities so that it may be a lesson to others, “Don’t do injustice to those who have no supporter and protector except God.”
I hope that before it is too late, the means of freeing all those imprisoned is prepared, and permission is given to the grieved families of those martyred in the recent events so that they may hold their ceremonies, and I sincerely hope that those superior authorities who gave the orders and their agents and all those who in any shape or form provoked the outbreak of what has finally led to these events, shall repent seeking consent of the victims of the assaults and batteries that took place, and in one word, I hope that they shall heed the advise of Ayatollah Hashemi and act upon it so that the already stained dossier of this government should not become soiled further than it did in the course of the election and in terms of legitimacy and acceptability which, according to the charter of the constitution, can only be attained through the absolute and unquestionable majority vote of the people, and as it is the burden of the government, it shall not become heavier and the basic rights of the people shall not get further squandered, and that instead of taking notice of people’s repeated protestations pleading their rights both within the country and outside of it, they shall not target the heads and hearts of the youth, since any further harassment, persecution and forced confessions, and the spreading of lies will fail to strengthen the government’s authority, and will further weaken the ruling system and will lead to a grudge against the ruling authorities, and the sighs of the innocent will inevitably end in the entrapment of the instigators of oppression and violence in a future not so far off.
Finally, as I have said before, I ask the noble people of Iran once again both inside and outside of the Islamic Republic, and I call upon all those who have risen their voices in order to make the innocent cries of the protestors be heard through out the world, not to be intimidated by the pressures of the gross injustice committed against them since that shall only led to the realization of the tyrannical will of the persecutors, and I ask you to keep on the non-violent path of peaceful demonstration and protestation.
I am grateful and I thank God that you gentlemen keeping your unity, as this is the secret and the key to your victory and will keep the people united behind you, have been able to tread this path steadfastly and single-mindedly as a united front specially attracting the youth, and the sweet scent of success in defending human rights and dignity and people’s sovereignty shall remain as your legacy.
